The sport is also very active in schools. The local clubs are involved in providing both in-school and out-of-school competitions.

In West Cumbria the 2010 series details are here. In the Carlisle and Penrith area go to the BorderLiners website. In the south of the County try the Lakeland OC website.

Almost all the schools in Cumbria have been mapped, particularly in West Cumbria. If you are keen to get the sport active in your school then EMAIL and we will check to see whether your school map needs updating..... there seems to be something new happening in the schools' grounds all the time!
The clubs in Cumbria are very active and provide very many opportunities to compete during the course of the year. The premier competition is the Cumbrian Galoppen series, which offers a range of courses to suit all abilities, and all ages. Each event attracts between 200 and 300 competitors, and has a fairly informal setup. Registration for your course is usually at a central point, where you pay your entry fee and select which course you wish to run.

The map on the FrontPage shows and gives a link through to the main clubs in Cumbria. Have a look at their websites. There will be a point of contact there, which will hopefully answer your queries. But if not, just EMAIL here and we will do our best to provide the information you need.

Orienteering takes you to some of the most impressive scenery in Cumbria. You don't always have a lot of time to enjoy the views as you race around the course! However, sometimes the views are so breathtaking that you just have to stop and take it all in!

An orienteering course follows a set of fixed control points set out in the terrain, but getting between them is up to you..... you have the freedom to choose your route, taking advantage of your map reading skills and the different options offered by the terrain itself.

This 'working out' of route choice as you run is the highlight of the challenge. It gives you immense pleasure when your choice produces a 'winning time'.
