Cumbria School Games

[Lakes-O Front Page]

The School Games uses an inter District format with the six Districts competing against each other. The Districts are Allerdale, Carlisle, Copeland, Eden, Furness (Barrow) and South Lakes.

Orienteering has been one of the sports offered since we joined the setup about ten years ago. Orienteering uses a specific format involving a team of competitors from each District made up of six boys and six girls. The teams used to be selected in each District from the best Year 5 and 6 pupils (who might have come from ten or more schools) who had taken part in the various School Leagues organised locally in each District, usually by the local orienteering club. More recently, however, just one or two schools each year provide the runners, but still based on the best performances from the local leagues.

The event format at the School Games involves a Qualifier Race for boys and girls separately. The top three performances in those races (from each District Team) go through to the second race, the A Final. The remaining runners go to the B Final. The second race is run on a different area with new courses.

The overall score for the various Teams is calculated from the A Final results with points awarded according to their finishing position, with any mispunchings scoring 36 points. A format that has proved popular, exciting and inclusive (a real Team effort!).
